چکیده

Recent pharmacokinetic studies (Zhou, 1989; Jori, 1990a) point out that hydrophobic photosensitising dyes with a porphyrin type macrocyclic skeleton exhibit excellent tumour-localising properties both in vitro and in vivo. Such dyes, systemically injected to experimental animals, become largely associated with serum lipoproteins (Kessel, 1990); one lipoprotein class, namely low-density lipoproteins (LDL), appears to act as tumour specific carriers of the bound photosensitiser (Jori, 1990b). Significant amounts of the injected dye are also accumulated by components of the reticuloendothelial system, such as liver and spleen. In general, the photosensitisers are eliminated from the neoplastic and some normal tissues at a low rate, similar to what has been observed for oligomeric constituents of Photofrin II (Bellnier & Dougherty, 1989). This is probably due to the embedding of the photosensitisers in lipid regions of subcellular organelles, which hinders their interaction with

Reducing livestock effects on public lands in the western United States as the climate changes: a reply to Svejcar et al.

Svejcar et al. (Environ Manage, 2014) offered several perspectives regarding Beschta et al. (Environ Manage 51:474-491, 2013)--a publication that addressed the interacting ecological effects of climate change and domestic, wild, and feral ungulates on public lands in the western United States (US)--by largely focusing on three livestock grazing issues: (1) legacy versus current day impacts; (2)...

Glade cascades: indirect legacy effects of pastoralism enhance the abundance and spatial structuring of arboreal fauna

Studies in community ecology are typically conducted over the span of a few years, and results are often interpreted as the product of contemporary processes and interactions. All landscapes have histories, however, and observed patterns of distribution and abundance frequently reflect enduring legacies of past ecological events, the existence and influence of which may not be obvious to invest...

Reform by reflection: Schön’s legacy to management practice in times of uncertainty

In this paper, we revisit Donald Schön’s scholarly work on “handling uncertainty”, suggesting that in order to cope reasonably well with uncertainty, practitioners should be encouraged to take a reflective existential stance, aimed to explore their own tacit personal style (i.e., theories-in-use). They should (i) recall and reflect on their theories-in-use to bear on the phenomenon, (ii) metaph...
